Here are a few mistakes that people make. Not paying much attention the risk involved in certain areas causes a problem. Always expect the unexpected. This means to be ready for rain or a storm, as well as other weather related issues.
Have a way of getting through situations that wouldn't normally happen and have a plan to go by when they do happen.
Have a compass. Not knowing where you are going is an accident waiting to happen. Simply going into the wilderness and walking around is a certainty of getting lost or confused. Be aware of where you are and educate yourself on the area you have chosen in outdoor survival.
Obviously, you want to know how to put your tent up or make some type of shelter, and you want to make sure you have the gear to build a fire. Or have the skills of starting one.
