The canal has a depth of five meters and is 30-90 m wide and 3,800 m long. It makes a large and beautiful backwards letter S shape through the middle and central districts of Venice. One of its ends leads into Saint Mark Basin while the opposite leads to a lagoon which is near the railway station in Santa Lucia.
The Grand Canal is the major water-way corridors in the city. One area to another can be reached using water buses as well as private water taxis. However, many tourists in Venice explore the whole canal using a gondola as it looks more challenging and romantic. Another unique characteristic of Venice is its impressive and magnificent architecture.
