The Heart of Madrid: The Puerta del Sol

Puerta del Sol or 'Sun Gate' is a place of fun, shopping, dining and for meet-ups of friends, families and business people. It is the heart of Madrid. Puerta del Sol is Madrid's downtown shopping district where everything you need can be found. It is the perfect point of origin in exploring the beautiful city of Madrid. It is one of the city's most populated and lively places. Puerta del Sol has dozens of shops along the plaza itself as well as the side streets which goes to all directions from the plaza. You will surely have a great shopping experience. This is also one of the reasons why a Madrid visit is worth having.

The "Bear and the (El Madroņo) Tree" ("El Oso y El Madroņo") or the Bear and the Strawberry Tree which is the symbol of the capital can be found in the middle of this district. This statue weighs about 20 tons. The tree of the statue symbolizes aristocracy while the female bear symbolizes Madrid's fertile soil.

The Real Casa de Correos is the central post office of Puerta del Sol which was built in 1768. It was designed by the French architect Jacques Marquet. Later in 1866, a clock tower was added to it. This famous clock has a big role on New Year's Eve. Millions of the Spaniards watch on TV or live at the square on a cold night to witness each of it's twelve chimes at midnight. A famous statue looks out at the famous casa since 1997. This statue is the large equestrian statue of King Carlos III in the middle of Puerta del Sol.
As described by Wikipedia, the Plaza Mayor lies to the Southwest of the Puerta while on its further west is the official home of the Royal Family popularly known as the Palacio Real. The train station Atocha can be found on its southeast while to its east is the museum district and the Parliament.
